Pyjamas and Pajamas - where do these words originate?

These words, often shortened to pjs or fondly referred to as jim jams and jammies originated from the Persian word "Peyjama", meaning "leg garment". The words pyjama and pajama were adopted into the English language during the British Raj through the Hindustani. The American people tend to use the word pajamas, and the British favour pyjamas!

Historically, pyjamas were loose fitting trousers with drawstring waistbands and made of lightweight fabric. They were worn by men and women in hotter climates such as South and West Asia. Pyjamas were not restricted to sleeping in or lounging around in as they tend to be now.
