Brief history of the Blouse

We wouldn't dream of calling any of our lovely pregnant customers peasants or workmen, but you may be artists and most probably women! A blouse was traditionally a loose fitting garment for the upper body worn by workmen, peasants, artists, women and children. It blouses out over the top of a waistband or belt. The English adopted the word blouse, meaning "dust coat" from the French. It can also be pronounced "blause" or "blooze", and it wasn't until the 1890's that it started to be favoured in a woman's wardrobe. Along with other types of clothes, it was eventually adapted for use during pregnancy. Blouses became more and more common and seemed to be the garment of choice for female office workers. As time moved on blouse design became more elaborate and blouses have since become a fairly staple item in a woman's wardrobe. How many of you reading this don't own a blouse. We bet there are not many that will say no!
